Ideas on the "Old" and the "New"

1.
  • Religion used to govern peoples everyday lives and decision making.
  • Exploration began to took place in order to broaden knowledge.
  • Trading expanded and through trade came new ideas and philosophy
2. As people brook away from the church and began to question, new ideas and philosophy began to arise.  The church had complete control over the way people thought, lived and worked. The church lost power due to the upraise of people aware of the restraints that had been put on them. When the population brook away, they were able to better their society and strengthen their knowledge of everything.

3.  The Age of Enlightenment was a time of great change and clarification.  People had never had the chance to think for themselves before this, so when given the chance they strived to improve their society for the better good.  Never before had science been practiced but to strengthen their numbers and their peoples intelligence, theory's and hypothesis came about. From science came philosophy and from philosophy came culture. The brake with the church lead to a stronger, better society.

4. Voltaire was a Parisian who fought for religious tolerance.  He believed that "all men are brothers under god." He also believed that god was the "clock maker" and he had created the clock (earth) and let it run on it's own without any interference.
The issue surrounding the religious community center being built in lower Manhattan is a topic that, I think, Voltaire would have fought for.  He stood for freedom and equal rights thus he would be supportive of the construction.  In his eyes, the community center would be a perfect way to join conflicting religions and make peace with them.  Link: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/p/park51/index.html?scp=1&sq=religious%20community%20center&st=cse

5. I think that joining the CVU community has molded me into the person I am today.  I have become more responsible and more outgoing from the experience so far and wise to further increase those quality's as well.  Meeting new people, taking classes that I want to take, and participating in extracurricular  activit has shaped me to the person I am.
